citizenM hotels recognized for participation and awarded 5 star rating in the 2021 GRESB Real Estate Assessment

Amsterdam, 15th October 2021 – citizenM demonstrates its continuing commitment to ESG transparency and improved performance by participating in the 2021 Real Estate Assessment and achieving the highest rating available, attained by only 20% of entrants, 5 stars.

This is the fourth year citizenM has taken part in the GRESB assessment. GRESB – formally known as the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark – is a mission-driven, investor-led organisation that has standardised ESG data. Since 2008, GRESB has been the global benchmark for real estate and, more recently, infrastructure. It has covered more than 96,000 assets and 540 infrastructure portfolios – and over 100 investors use this data to steer the industry towards a more sustainable future. ​

Each year, GRESB assesses and benchmarks the ESG performance of assets worldwide, providing clarity and insights to financial markets on complex sustainability topics. The GRESB Assessments are guided by what investors and the industry consider to be material issues in the sustainability performance of asset investments and are aligned with international reporting frameworks, goals and emerging regulations. The GRESB ESG Benchmark grew this year to cover more than $6.4 trillion of assets under management, up from $5.3 trillion the year before.

GRESB data is used by hundreds of capital providers and thousands of asset managers to benchmark investments across portfolios and to better understand the opportunities, risks and choices that need to be made as the industry transitions to a more sustainable future. ​

The award demonstrates citizenM’s commitment to its wider Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy: to be a proudly conscious, sustainable hotel brand. Taking part in the GRESB assessment means citizenM can align with ESG standards and grow as a positive, sustainable brand whilst benchmarking itself against leaders in the real estate industry. It’s working, too: 2020 saw citizenM jump over 25% in their score compared to 2019 for the GRESB standing investment benchmark report. In 2021, their score jumped a further 12%, placing citizenM in the five-star rating category.

In summer 2020, citizenM launched an app that’s much more than a room reservation tool. The app enables fully contactless stays (checking in, opening doors, adjusting room ambiance, paying for purchases – all via the guest’s own smartphone), and adds dozens of local perks (like discounts on bike rentals and food), tailored experiences, collectable badges and city guides. The app and contactless journey is the first of its kind in the world and was awarded winner of the ‘contactless solution’ category in the Skift 2020 IDEA Awards. The app is a natural continuation of citizenM’s tech-forward approach – the brand has always had one-minute self-check-in kiosks (instead of traditional reception desks), iPad room controls (in addition to wall switches), and superfast free Wi-Fi (everywhere) as part of its unique guest experience.

citizenM intends to keep growing as a fully integrated owner-operator in selected gateway cities around the world. Its unique value proposition, delivering a high profitability per square metre, allows the brand to develop hotels on prime locations in cities with the highest barriers to entry. citizenM can acquire development sites and turnkey delivered hotels and is open to joint ventures on individual projects. citizenM considers new-build developments, office conversions, components of mixed-use schemes or conversions of existing hotels. The company will also selectively consider asset-light transactions.
